McGuinn's '66 370/12 On The 'Bay

Post by randyz »

Has anyone else noticed McGuinn's guitar for sale? This is apparently his second Rick, ordered with the factory compressor circuit and special controls. In '69 he did the sloppy tuner replacement. Check it out!

I'm watching it also. $ 60,000.00 opening bid plus a 20% ($12,000.00) buyers premium. That's $ 72,000.00 to start - Yikes!

Randy, the wiring for this guitar is not like the reissue Roger McGuinn limited edition guitars; this guitar has no onboard compressor, none of the originals made in the 60's had that...only 3 individual p/up knobs and a master volume knob, plus a pickup selector and tone cut switch. The slide switch in between the two toggle switches is the Vox Treble Boost unit that McGuinn added himslelf later on, not part of the original circuit when it left Rickenbacker in June 1966.

John: Thanks for the info. You obviously know more about McGuinn's guitars than I do. Thanks for the clarification!

McGuinn pulled the Vox unit out of the guitar some time before selling it in 1979.

The guitar sold for $170K. This is $50K more than we got for it at auction almost exactly 2 years ago. Not bad appreciation, although it means the seller barely broke even.

Is this the 370-12 with Roger's name under it I just saw hanging on the wall (over the grill area)of the London Hard Rock Cafe?

Bill, I doubt if it is one that was owned or used by McGuinn...Having said that, I don't know who bought the guitar this time around or where it went....

Anyone know why Roger sold it in '79?
This is off the record
