why would someone bid $1600 on a '74 4001???
I don't get it ... in my mind it is worth half of that ... it aint rare ... they made a ton of these in the 70s ... just because gcrep and the emperor keep listing basses more than they are worth doesn't mean that an $800 bass is worth $1600 ...

Amen! I would love to get another 75, but at the prices they are asking it isn't worth it.

Makes me glad that I have 4 4001 basses, all purchased at very reasonable prices.
What about the prices of 70's and 80's Fenders? I had a '76 Precision that I bought new that year. It wasn't THAT great. My Univox Hi-Flyer sounded better. I had to install DiMarzio pickups and a BadAss II bridge to make that P-bass sound good.

I bought a 74 P bass maybe 4 years ago for $400 and a 76 mg 4001 around the same time for $450. Although they are players they are also investments and keep going up in value...
Would I pay that kind of money (as in the ebay auction listed above) for a mid 70's rick or fender..NO...my 4005 has almost trippled in value in the last 2 years...better return than any of my stocks AND I get to play them.
Remember, that not too long ago (2 years) 4000's were going for $400-$500....somehow I think that boards like this are at least partially responsible for the rise in prices....dm

$1600 for a '74? Here in the UK that is a great price. You guys in the States don't appreciate how lucky you are having a virtually unlimited supply!

74's are the last vintage Rics to have a desirable vintage feature - the half-inch spacing. It's a feature that, unlike checkerboard binding, crushed pearl inlays, split tailpiece, Plexi nameplate or a toaster pickup - can be visible even from 300 feet. By '75 that was gone too. I know I would be prepared to pay extra for a '74 over a '75 just to have the neck pickup in the 'old' location.

Hey Jeff,
If you're referring to the one on eBay from Chicago Music Exchange, it's not a 1974 4001, it's a May 1973 model. Check out the serial number:-

With checkerboard binding and half-inch spaced toaster I'm not at all surprised how high the current bidding has reached.

$1600 is warranted for a 73, considering 72's go for $2000+, 71-70's go for $2200+, 69-67's go for $2400+ and pre-67's fetch on average $2600+... seems about right based on current trends.

I'm in complete agreement with Peter. A '74 for $1600 (around £800-£900 give or take) would be a very good buy indeed in the UK . If it's a '73 it would be a steal...

I paid $1100.00 for my '73 4001 that is similar to that one but in overall better condition back in February '03.
That funny mottling you see on the body is reflections only.
