one of the forum members asked me what strings I used on this recording ...

I used copley nickle round wound strings ...

but they are currently out of stock ... I think these strings are made by another major string manufacturer and copley puts their name on them ... these are good strings ... they are planning on getting more ... email them and tell them to hurry up ...

also on that recording I used this bass ...

and I played the song without a pick ... I used my line 6 bass pod and ran it into an ampeg b2r with 4 eminence 10" speakers ... it was miked with an sm57 and then recorded from a send from the in-ear monitor system on a 4 track analog recorder ... the signal was a little too hot and is a little distorted ...

Jeff...I have to give you a high five on that conversion. That bass is WAY cool. I'm at work now, but when I get home I'd like to hear the sound clip.

that one went through a lot of experiments with pickups and electronics ... I tried, toasters, high gains, hb1, and other pickups with 250k 500k and 1000k pots in a vvt configuration ... the way it is now is 2 hb1 pickups with 1000k ohm pots ... that is probably more of why it sounds like it does rather than the strings that I use ... the 1000k ohms pots give it a wide open treble bite while still having plenty of low end ...

Jeff, that thing sounds great. I won't say I'm surprised, but when I saw the conversion, I thought the E and G were too close to the edge of the pickups to sound full (I looked at the pic BEFORE I listened!) but, yikes, that's super! Good tune too.

Are the Rotosound nickels loose like the original RIC strings? I like the looseness of the original strings.

I was very surprised to find that the Rotosound nickels are NOTHING like the original Ric strings. They are tighter and feel like coarse sandpaper. They also sound terrible IMHO. Very dull compared to the Ric strings. Mind you the middle two strings are also thicker than Ric's .045 - .105 set.

You know how a lot of musicians say that they record a dozen takes of a song and the first one always seems to turn out the best? Well this has been my experience looking for just the right strings -- the Ric strings are fantastic for both playability and tone. Too bad they are so bloody expensive! Mind you I've now switched to flats, but that's a story for another post!

Jeff, I like your bass tone on that song much more than the bass tone on the original by Staind...but I do prefer the lead vocal of Aaron Lewis.

That is a cool tone. I want to use the word grinding to describe it. There certainly ain't no thump!

Great tone! I'm putting a set of Roto Swing Bass 66's on my 4001 tonight. Having never tried them before, it should prove interesting.
I rather like the RIC strings (on another bass), but the lighter A & D strings slowed me down for a few days.
