How about some French?..

A little French weekend puzzle for you, here's the link for a short clip of an instrumental composition recorded in 1969.
The original was written & recorded by famous (or should we say infamous?) French actor/director/songwriter/performer in 1969. Can you identify the author/performer & the title of the original composition / the performer & the title of the cover? Can you say why i think the cover was renamed a bit oddly?
Cheers,
SC.

Haven't listened to it, but is it our old friend Serge Gainsbourg?

Spot on, Paul - so, i suggest identifying the title of the original wouldn't be too hard...Image

The song will be Je T'aime Moi No Plus by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg there is debate over lyrics meaning but I believe it is I Love You(I love You No Less)

I thought this was the original but he did record it with Brigitte Bardot too

Yes, right, but i'd rather translate it as "I love you - Me neither", imho it's closer to what was meant, taking the whole lyric into account, and bearing in mind "plus" means "more", while "non plus", IIRC, is used in constructions of the following kind: "Je ne le comprends pas (I don't understand it) - Moi non plus (Me neither)"...
But the other question remains: who did the cover and what was the title? And why does it seem a bit odd?

It's been covered by a number of people so I am not sure of answer Sheena, more clues perhaps?

Hmmm... i'd put it the following way: this was a band whose name kind of described the quality of their sound...

ImageCool versions, but nope... i don't think it sounds like Grateful Dead, and as far as the Pistols are concerned... not to mention it doesn't sound like them, the band was founded in 1975 IIRC, and therefore, they couldn't have cut the record in 1969... methinks... and to be true, i do not remember them cutting a cover of this one...
That's a kind of a direct reference to the quality of the sound

One of my female French students burned me an entire CD of Serge's solo stuff and I found myself chucking it out the car window. Gosh, what boring, self-involved junque...

It was a pleasure to replace him with a real singer like Charles Trenet.

Gosh, what boring, self-involved junque...

Could be, could be, albeit i disagree... pleasure is in the ears of the listener, imho...
Another hint for a band in question: the name consists of two words, first one is the verb, second one is adverb/adjective...

Anybody?..
The first word in the band name is "Sounds"...
