After years of reading here (notice my post amount), sent him a beast of a P Bass. I have a weekly church gig that demands a low B, and my 1980 P Special is the quietest electronically so without further ado....

He's doing a 4003 jetglo for me also....the guy is a serious talent.

Besides, its not a pure P with the Jazz in the bridge position IMO.

Jeffs work on this is immaculate, it came back better than I sent it, cleaned, new PG screws....

This one has undergone some changes since this pic. It now has a Dimarzio model P in the neck position, a Carvin J99 in the bridge, a Philip Kubiki maple Jazz neck I snagged off of ebay, and an anodized guard swiped off of an old Tokai.



It is the ultimate gigging bass (for those F****r tones), lightweight, punchy, and plays like a dream.

I don't really appreciate the aesthetics of the Fender shape but the ones above look like nice examples.

Dave ... that old 80s p-bass is a player ... man it is heavy ... like 12 to 15 pounds ... it was a challenge to get the 4 string emg pickup to cover the 5 string ... the emg p-bass pickup has a gap in the center so the A string dropped off ... but I moved the pickup slightly and it works fine ... the usual p-bass pickup has 8 pole pieces and there is no problem at all covering 5 strings ...

The jetglo 4003 is coming along fine ... the neck is strong and straight ... there is a ric-o-sound and toggle problem that I am working on ... I see why John Hall didn't put those features in the 4004 bass they are the weakest points of a 4003 ...

a p-bass makes a good 4-2-5 bass ... I set the bridge to be 2 3/8" to 2 5/8" range and the p-bass neck is a nice neck with plenty of room for 5 string but still slim enough to be comfortable and the p-bass is an attractive design and the p-bass pickup has a distinctive pleasing sound ... for a 4-2-5 I usually prefer a pj setup and a vvt control setup ...

Yeah, I agree Brian. The Fender "P" shape is kinda boxy and boring.

They do make a good bar bass though.

The chrome plated steel pickguard weighs at least 2 lbs.

I'm still on the fence about 4-2-5ing my Jetglo Cii. I want to, but I want to see if the Cii5 gets relaunched. If so then I can just leave that Cii alone.

It's really weird, because I usually like contoured basses (4001S over 4001 deluxe for example), but the only P-basses I like are the slab P's. I think they look better when they're just a block with a pickguard. I dunno, just, like, a white slab P-bass with a tortoise-shell pickguard is beautiful to me, but a newer P-bass somehow looks boring. Maybe my brain is just screwy.

Those 5-strings are quite cool though.

I agree, Just like the Ric 4003, theres no bass like a pure Precision...its THE Dinosaur.

For my money, when it comes to Precisions, I prefer the true single coil versions ('51 thru mid 57, or reissues thereof) vs the split pickup versions, slab or no.

I be a Rickenbacker would sound great with one of those singles.

I love the precision basses. I really like my reissue. But I wouldnt buy one of the newer ones. Same with most of the newer Jazz basses tho(besides my aerodyne,which i love). They just dont seem to match up. Maybe its all in my head.
You know there making a Jaguar Jazz bass now? Wonder how that well go.

You have to have your Ric, P and J basses. Even if you rarely use them. You have to have them.
Then again I think I "have" to have a Sting Ray and wal and probly anything else I find to be kool.
