Opening up a 75 mapleglo today...

so my guitarist who works for GC called me this afternoon telling me that someone just sold a '75 MG and wanted me to come look at it as no one there knows anything about Rics (neither do i!). it is a 75 and it has some mods on it: replacement RIC tuners and a horseshoe pup that looked pretty new. i asked him if we could open up the cavity so he did. no masking tape on the pickguard and there were 2 holes in the body, so i am assuming a bad PG replacement as well. the nut didn't look original, but i am not really sure.

anyway, in the cavity, the wood was painted green. is that common?

overall the bass looked great and it was offered to me for a fraction over what they brought it in for, but i declined. if anyone thinks they may be interested, i may be able to get some photos. it comes with an old TKL case.

one thing that also stood out was how much the damned thing weighed. it was definitely a few lbs more than both of my rics.

i can get it for around 750 or so. the guy emailed me last night and said he thinks the truss rod is trashed. i will try and look at that this week, but i am definitely no expert or even a novice on the rods.

The weight of 4001s (and 4003s for that matter) can vary quite a bit. When I bought my 8 string there were about four 70s 4001s in the same shop and they all outweighed the 4003s8 by a considerable margin, which is hardly what you'd expect. My original '80 4001 weighed more than my old P Bass. I once played Neil Brewer's '72 4001 and it weighed a good couple of pounds more than my '72.
