I just received my '77 neck pup back from Sergio, who did a marvelous job rewinding it. The poor 4001 was subjected to much abuse in it's former homes which left it rather scarred & with the neck pup near dead (very low output) and the bridge pup missing & replaced with a Jackson J style pup.
Not knowing any better at the time, I replaced these pups with Seymour Duncan replacement pickups.

Now, thanks to the kind offer to rewind the pickup my bass is sounding better than ever.
The tone only, hinted at before, is back in full force. Clarity & pleasing overtones replace the rather lifeless flat sound I had experienced before.
Sergio wound the pickup to 8K ohms, I believe, to replicate the stock impedance of the mid to late '70s. I wanted to hear what she sounded like when she was new (or at least as close as a 30 year old bass could).
I'm certainly very impressed.

Sounds great Kevin! I've only heard good things about Sergios work. I can't wait to get my Sergio toaster/higain hybrids back in my 340.

i wouldn't mind making the pups in my 79 and 80 a little hotter. what is the price for this and how long does it take?

Free of charge. A few days or a few weeks.

Update: My band played out last night & the newly rewound pup sounded great! Much clearer, lots of mids & highs & loads of growl.
I like the sound of it so much, I used just the neck pup for a couple of slow songs (something I never did before).

Actually, reading a thread over in your section has me thinking toaster conversion... I love the sound of my HG but love the look of the toaster...

I need to raise my neck pup a bit but it doesn't seem to want to get any higher. Any ideas? It's a '05 4003 with a vintage toaster @ the neck. The toaster isn't nearly as loud as the bridge high gain.

Try lowering the bridge pickup if you need to even out the volume- the toaster is a bit weaker by design if I recall correctly. The bridge high gain is very hot by comparison.

I wonder what a hot toaster would sound like.
