I just picked-up a copy of a film entitled 'Dateline Diamonds'. It was filmed in 1965 but released on 4/3/66. It features a several mimed performances by the original band line-up featuring Jimmy Winston on rhythm guitar and keyboards. In at least one number, he is shown playing an RM1998. Marriott is playing a Gretsch as usual. This is the first time I've ever seen a Rick on stage with The Small Faces. Winston was soon replaced by Ian McLagan, but went on to front a new group called Winston's Fumbs.

Winston played a Rick semi before playing keys in the band. I think he played some guitar as well on his SF recordings?

Yes, I've read that Winston played some guitar on early Small Faces sessions. Interestingly, Ian McLagan's first public appearance with the Small Faces (11/2/65) had him miming the guitar parts for 'I've Got Mine' with a Fender Telecaster. This was for a taping of a Radio Luxembourg program called 'Ready Steady Radio'. Don't ask me why a radio taping needed to be mimed. Perhaps there was a studio audience involved. To complicate matters, Winston also showed up for the gig, not apparently realizing he was out of the group. Ouch!

Mac's a great guy, he lives here and I've chatted with him many times. Lately he's called me "The other Ronnie the bass player".

Ronn: That's so cool. I knew that Ronnie lived in Austin for several years before his death. Just recently I heard a McLagan solo CD that indicated that he too was in Austin. It's a small world, that's getting smaller all the time!

Just for the sake of accuracy, let me point out a few more fun facts regarding Jimmy Winston. He and Steve Marriott first played together in The Moments, who recorded and released (in the USA) one 45 in 1964. Another 45 was recorded but never released. After being booted from The Small Faces, Winston formed a band called Jimmy Winston And His Reflections. They recorded and released a 45 in 1966. Later he formed Winston's Fumbs who also released a 45 in '67 or '68

What a cool band. The guitar player in my last band is a huge SF fan.
