I think you are right Dave..

It sure is not a "PE" which would be a "76".

It could also be "QE" which would place it in May '77.

On my monitor, it looks like "QE", 1977. Maybe they got they date from the pots? Great looking bass though!

The ad says 1976, and says "OE." There is at least one web site that incorrectly lists the serial numbers as one year off. Maybe he was looking at that site for the date.
Nice looking bass.

I saved the picture and zoomed in- while there appears to be a line where there *would* be if it were a Q, it is not clear if it is just a wear mark.

Regardless, it IS a nice bass.

Great looking bass. But I tend to think it's Walnut not Autumnglo.

I recall JH saying a few years ago that the mid 70's version of Autumnglo had a satin finish to it. Any Autumnglo looking finish from the same era with a high gloss would be Walnut.

It's difficult to tell for sure in some of the photos of this bass, but there are a couple that clearly show a high gloss finish.

I know I'm getting old, but I don't think I'm senile yet. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Walnut and Autumnglo are in fact the same color. The difference is that Autumnglo has a matte finish where Walnut is glossy. Of course, the matte finish rubs out to a lovely high gloss over time so it can be hard to tell the difference unless you can take a peek under the guard or TRC.

Are you sure Ted? I always thought autumnglow was a lot lighter, like this one, from Mike Park's site.

I have one of each (a '76 AutumnGlo and a '77 Walnut). I don't believe there's any colour differences between mine, and any variations I've seen between Walnut and AutumnGlo could be put down to photographic colour reproduction errors or the expected colour matching tolerances between batches. FireGlo has equally as many colour variations as AutumnGlo/Walnut, and I even remember a 4001 on eBay about a year ago that was debated as to whether it was FireGlo or Walnut, because it really was half-way between red and brown!
