I saw this on PBS the other night and found the same clip on YouTube. The best shots of the bass begin at 1:59 into the video. I'm not sure of the year. Enjoy.

Looks like they were taking off the bridge p/u covers even back then!
I wonder where that bass is today.....

Well, Pretty Woman was at it's chart peak on 9-5-64, so it's probably a '63 or early '64? Beautiful early Deluxe jobber in Mapleglo. Looks like black knobs with no silver inserts too. And, depending on my monitor quality, perhaps no thumbrest either. Nice shots!

I saw that clip in Lima Peru about 3 years ago, it was lip synched, the bass on the record is probably a P bass as 99% of them were back then.

Roy might have sang that live, or it was lip-synched to an outtake because those vocals are different than the original release. The whole thing actually sounds a little different to my old ears!

Listen to the acoustics - that's done live. Also different than the recording. Sounds like McCartney's bass.
I remember seeing that way back when. I would have been about 12 1/2.

That is most definitely not synched. You can see the placement of the drums and piano to avoid any leakage into the Roy's mic. The mix is completely different than the single release and you can hear the ambient drum reverb all over the mix as well. The piano is drowned out by the snare.

Sounds live to me. That bass looks huge on that guy.
It could be an 63 or possibly a very early 64 with the export knobs on it. Most deluxes from this time do have these fitted.

Looks just right to me. But than I am not a big guy. I ordered a longhorn and I am worred that it will feel like a toy... guitars are so puny.

Once, just once in my so-called musical career I want to be on a stage whose set design concept is giant stereo components with each band member standing on a big box with some baloney-sliced doweling used as the fake knobs glued to the front.
