Does anyone know anything about these, especially the latter? How many were made? Also, who designed them, as there are obvious similarities in design (i.e. german carve on front of a New Style 360 Body, ac'cent vibrato, deluxe features).

This isn't a great pic, but here is one of the two Mando Guitars that were built.

"In 1971, Rickenbacker made some ‘Mando Guitars’ for Richard Ferrara, a retired dermatologist. At age 33, Doc Ferrara was given banjo lessons by Eddie Peabody, and the two became friends. According to serial-number logs, 3 mandos were made, with Doc Ferrara receiving two (a mapleglo and fireglo) and the third possibly being a spare; the 3 mando’s had serial numbers KA 005, KA 006, and KA 009. This fireglo mando, formerly Doc Ferrara’s, has serial number KA 016, and records show that as a 4001, so it is assumed that the ‘wrong’ plate was attached at the factory. In essence, this is a custom ordered Rickenbacker Banjoline 6006 - the model associated with Eddie Peabody. The mando features most all of the appointments of the 6006. Note an elongated 8-string headstock, and the unique “Mando Guitar, by Ferrara” truss-rod cover. This instrument was mentioned in the Richard Smith book (pg. 159) and was incorrectly identified as a twelve-string octave guitar."
