On the Sgt Pepper Live DVD, Tom has a 4001 or 4003 next to his amp all the way through the show.
He uses a Thunderbird throughout.

I can't even comprehend the kind of hand strength someone has to have to play a 12 string bass.

Played 12 as my main bass for most of the 90s. If your bass is set up properly its not that tough.

Tom using Ric 8 - among others - in this excellent promo clip for Best Of video 'Every Trick in the book'.
Robin also uses a lightshow at certain points.
