Just to let you know that Tom is credited with Rickenbacker bass (amongst others) on the new Cheap Trick album 'Rockford' which is just out.
It's the best thing they've done for a few years!!!

I like what I have heard of it so far...I still haven't picked up a copy of it yet. They are one of my favorite bands, as many of you know.

I'll have to pick it up. 'Special One' was disappointing but the cd before was amazing. It's one of my favourites. I think the bass sound Tom gets is always superior. The first LP had one of the best hard rock bass sounds ever committed to tape IMHO.

He's also on the cover of the new issue of Bass Player. No Rick basses, but it shows a pic of his old Rickenbacker Transonic 2x15 cabinet...

'bout time he played a rick. A roadie on another board said the transonics on one of the 90s CT tours were just for show, not even plugged in.
I remember having a go on his original Quadra Bass in the early 80s, when it was for sale in LA. I wonder who has it today.

According to my preview, Cheap Trick will be appearing on Conan O'Brien tonight! Tune in and check out his massive Waterstone 12-string tone!

If his Waterstone basses are "so good", why is he ripping pickups out of them?
He is credited with using a Ric on the new Rockford album. The bass sound throughout is just brilliant. His best yet.

I would have said Rickenbacker or Hamer had I known he would have been playing that bass...but I knew he would be playing the Waterstone...it was that same bass (with 2 pickups) and the body REVERSED, with the cutaway at the top.

I've read that TP prefers the neck pickup position so he just takes the other one out of some of his Waterstones. The "group" photo in this month's Bass Player shows one Waterstone with both, but the others with just one. BTW the pickups on my TP-34 are really good, very full without a lot of mud.

About Tom's tone in the studio... I just got a copy of Cheap Trick's version of Magical Mystery Tour a couple of days ago. Holy! The bass tone is just plain enormous - very clear & deep. I assume this is the Waterstone 12? For anyone who hasn't heard this song, let me know and I'll send you the MP3. Definitely a must-hear.

I dunno if that is the Waterstone, that was around 1991, I think he was still playing Hamers then. He went from the Hamers to Kids 12 strings, the Waterstone is heard on the most recent CT stuff.
I love that version of MMT!!

It's a Hamer B12A, Waterstone wasn't made then. I agree that it's a good version.

Was it just the Rockford album with the Rickenbacker? Any clues what year and model?
