I strongly suspect that this is a non-factory addition. The pickguard does not look like the one on the 1999 370/12V64 I once owned from the Norm's Rare Guitars '99 run of exciting guitars. That one had a flat edge a la 370.

I noticed that as well. I wonder why they changed the pickgaurd or for that matter why they added the 3rd pickup for?

I add a third pick up on most of my Rics...it improves & adds an extra dimension to the sound IMO & 340/370's are not readily available. I am even thinking of adding a third to my 381-12.

The pickguard is quite good actually on this one...I don't dislike it.

No, it's a good job. Mind you, I am not 100% sure it is not factory, but I suspect it. Wonder if I am wrong (again :-) )

Surely Bob, if it was factory, they would have put a standard 340/370 top guard on?

This pickguard reminds me of the one on Jeffrey Foskett's 1970 3 pickup 381/12. I bought a similar gold "381" set from him a few years ago but then decided not to modify my Fireglo 381/12V69. Jeff stated that those guards were supplied by Rickenbacker.

I suppose you don't have a pic of the three pickup 381 do you Kev?

Tony, I don't, but the guitar is shown on pages 76 and 89 of the "Smith" Rickenbacker book. Roger McGuinn is shown holding the same guitar in the "Forward" section at the front of the book. Jeffrey Foskett told me that Roger McGuinn gave him the guitar and believes that is was originally "custom made" for him by Rickenbacker.

Tony, Here is a link to another 3 pickup 381 with a few other custom touches.

Here is another link showing a Fireglo 3 pickup 381/12 and it also shows a photo of Jeffrey Foskett's guitar.

Thanks Kev....I can see a routing job in my near future. They look great with three pickups & would give me the extra sound as well.

Very serious consideration....I do it to all my others, why not a 381-12?

Bob, you are most probably right. The pickguard looks nothing like the one on my 1993 factory 370/12v64 FG:

The seller has ended the auction early and cancelled all bids.
