RIC's Polishing Cloth

Greetings,

Recently I brought a new 620/6 BlueBurst. When I took it home there was not a swirl on it. Now today as I inspected it closely in preparation of a "Zymol" treatment I've noticed there are very light swirl marks. The only thing that has touched this guitar is the Ric Polishing Cloth. Can the Ric cloth cause this? When ever I wiped the guitar down I've make sure to do it ever so gently. So what do you think.

Nope, Frank. The cloth had zero to do with this.

Very light swirls in strong light, are typical of Rick finishes upon leaving the factory, as they are buffed on large cloth wheels with stick compound, and the conversion varnish finish is formulated with a highly-impact-resistant surface, which translates to "softer than polyester", which most Mexican- and Asian-built guitars are finished with.

I noticed this on my very first Rick--my MB 660/12, and that day back in 2004 was when I first got out the Scratch-X and diapers and went to work on it and my MB 381. The Scratch-X took out the swirls, and the Zymol glossed up the surface.

Problem solved.

I wonder if the older finish formulation and perhaps different compounds used in the 60s and 70s made it so you never saw the "swirl" phenomenom. At least ,I never saw it, and I had a few new Ricks back in the day. Comments?

Jingle-Jangle,

So should I Scratch-X it (I already have the diapers) before doing the Zymol treatment? Thanks for the help.

Scratch-X it first. See previous threads on the topic for detailed instructions. Use the search feature on this forum, keywords "Scratch-X" and "Zymol".

Jingle-Jangle,

I've only been around a short time but have already read a great deal of your posts on "Scratch-X and Zymol" to know how to do it and to know that you are the RIC Guru when it comes to refurbishing, and shining up a guitar. Oh yea, I also love that AquaGlo...Thanks again.
