I know it might have been discussed here before, but driving home from a gig tonight I heard "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" by Genesis, and remembered how much I LOVE that bass tone...I assume that is a Rick?
I then came home and put on the CD of the entire album.

I'll bet if you search Rutherford on here, you'll find several threads. Lots of info about his collection of doublenecks.

Steve, it's a 6-string Micro-Frets bass. He had it combined with a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar for the tour.

Is that what the studio version was recorded with, or what he played live on tour?

He used the doubleneck live, the bass part was the "uncut" version and he used that on the album. The same doubleneck was also used on "A Trick Of The Tail" album and tour. It's an E-A-D-G-B-E tuned short scale bass.
A Canadian Genesis tribute band The Musical Box built a similar Micro-Frets/Rickenbacker doubleneck for their "Lamb" shows. A similar but left-handed!

Oh, I thought he used a Shergold on the "Trick of the Tail" and the tour. I LOVE the bass tone on "Lamb" nonetheless . . . apparently, a lot of it is him playing bass and doubling it with Taurus pedals.
Oh, also . . . what the heck is "Micro-Frets"? Is it a brand that was around for a short time? Or a specific type of bass? Or what?

Neither the Microfret, nor the Shergold were used on the Trick tour, but a custom doubleneck from Dick Knight. I believe Microfret was a brand at the time - apparently not very successful.

Dick Knight was also used on Trick tour, but I've seen pics from that tour where Mike plays the Micro/Rick doubleneck, here's one:

He later said in an interview that the Dick Knight 6-string bass/12-string guityar doubleneck didn't really work out for him.
Shergolds came for the Wind And Wuthering tour.

Pekka, thanks for those links, I was obviously wrong about the success of Micro-Fret. My apologies to them!
That Ontario show must be very near the start of the Trick tour as Mike himself has said that he only used the Micro-Fret on the Lamb tour. I too have read that Mike didn't get on with the Dick Knight, but it seems to have been used for most of that tour, certainly the later dates.
