I loved John's tone and style.

My finger style playing is a cross between him and Geddy Lee. More on the Entwistle style I think, probably because back when I started, I had to utilize the "piano attack" type of finger picking just to cut through the mix.

Great player that John Entwistle.

The Ox was something indeed. I saw them on their first "final" tour in Kentucky. John would start a lot of songs with a pick - then flick it into the audience and finish out the song with his fingers. I just basically watched his hands through the binoculars all night.

That was '78... he was way ahead of the game in his style, sound, speed and dexterity. An individual player with such a unique talent that he will never be equalled. He had a great platform with Townshends songs with the freedom to do what he liked. It wasnt too cluttered because Townshend was generally playing big chords. Fantastic.... Oh and I'm going to see whats left of The Who in 10 days time.

What always gets me watching Entwistle is his total lack of movement or expression. He rips off a vicious run or lick and he's practically motionless. Almost like he's bored or something.

I remember reading to the effect somewhere that, when JE was asked why he played so stoicly while the rest of the band was in a frenzy, he said that if he didn't anchor the band down, they all would just fly off the stage.

I also think that John was a pretty good song writer - I love "My Wife", "Heaven and Hell", and even some of the 'quirkier' older ones like "Boris The Spider".

Amazing playing...so much of that goes "unheard" because in that song, Daltrey's singing and Townshend's guitar are so prominent, to hear all of that going on underneath it emphasizes how important (and underappreciated) his playing was in that band.
I mean, everyone knew how good he was, but so much focus was on Roger and Pete (and Keith, as well)..

I watched some "Leeds" performances, and it's hilarious, JE and Moon playing ferociously, Townshend just punching a chord now and then. Big full sound before Pete plays a note.
