Ha! I KNEW that having walnut wings AND a skunk stripe would look amazing . . . now to just find a bass with a skunk stripe . . .

Skunk stripes (actually a shadua strip) appear to have started either in late 71 or in 72 (mine is a June 72), and continued through the end of the 4001 production in 1980 or thereabouts. I had Ted Staberow put on the walnut wings, but they're small because the headstock shape was smaller in the early '70s.
The finished bass will debut at the RIC 75th/SoCalCon the end of August. Just one more reason you all should go.

This is not helping me in my quest not to be tempted to refin my '68.

What's done is done, but given the narrower headstock wings on some 4001's, I'd have the wings sawn off down the center of the tuner holes. That way, you'd have more walnut and a more vintage look.

But it looks way cool just the same Paul. I look forward to seeing it in August.

Even with all of the stuff that had to be done to that bass, I would have been hard pressed to take a saw to the headstock just to give it wider wings.

I did, though, lengthen the point on the GD wing slightly and deepened the scallop a bit further than the original.

Looks sort of "orange-peely" to me...What happened?

I would imagine that the next step is color sanding, followed by buffing. The orange peel is not uncommon at this stage.
