I do'nt know who initiated the concentric conversion idea here at the forum but it sure helped my new 4004 Cii ! Thanks to all you forumites.

I don't know either ... my idea was the VVT arrangement ... but either way blending pickups on the 4004 makes for a big improvement ...

I suggested concentrics a while back because I liked Jeff's idea of separate volumes. Concentrics make the mod totally reversible. 4004s in general are not all that common so reversible is good.

Scott Doseck was the first to do the CM on a 4004 IIRC.

Yes, Scott was the first to actually do it. AFAIK he loves the mod.

I recall someone saying they put in the concentric pots but then the pu selector had to be in the middle - up or down it acted as a mute. I a perfect world that shouldn't happen, but if I were to do this mod I'd like to know that I'd be getting it right the first. It's going to be frustrating enough to do that much soldering, I'd like to only have to do it once! Image

I found a wiring diagram for a 62 RI J bass...would seem that this should be just about what you need to do?

http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdfs/AV62JAZZ/SD0190209CPg2.pdf

But the problem with this diagram is that is not dealing with the selector switch...

So I also looked at the wiring diagram for a 4001s...

http://www.rickenbacker.com/pdfs/19501.pdf

the problem I had with that is with the stacked pots you are dealing with 6 pins...

I'm thinking if I follow the 4001s diagram up to the pots, then follow the Fender diagram I might have it right.

I also used the wiring diagram from an early Jazz bass . I think it makes the 3 way switch unnecessary .

Or you could use 4003 wiring.

It is cool that someone has tried it and found it useful. I will do it to my 4004C someday.

A Concentric Thanks

Glad it worked out Barry. The beautiful think about this mod is that can be reversed if you wish with no permanent mod to the bass.

I vote VVT with vintage knobs, not my idea, I didn't do the mod, but it looks great and will probably stay like this forever. When this bass gains value in about 20 years or so, it won't matter, I don't think I'm going to get to take it with me.
