Hear my basses ...

you can hear 13 different basses ...
I was thinking of how Geddy gets a similar sound with a jazz and a Ric ... so I did a test ... I ran each bass through my bass pod ... I have a "Exit Stage Left" patch ... I ran it direct into a Tascam cassette recorder ...

Cool Jeff,
It must be hard to choose one to play. I like them all. Some sound very similar to each other, at least to my ears.

I thought they sounded a lot alike, but one that was especially distinct was the oil-finished T-bird.

ya they do sound a lot alike ... that shows how playing style has a lot to do with tone ...

ok I fixed the flush.mp3 ...
but what surprised me is how similar the basses sound when I play the over the top Geddy style with the bass pod ... they actually have more differences when I run into an amp instead of going direct ...

I feel it isn't really Geddy's ESL tone though. I think he isn't using much chorus, except for the intro (the trees).

If you listen carefully, all of ESL has chorus on the bass. Ged has confirmed that in a couple of interviews.... It is very,very slight though. I found that was what was missing from my tone.
The chorus just brings out the bark a bit more and makes the upper notes more defined.

Hmzz I had a better result without chorus. Maybe it's because of my ****** Behringer chorus pedal
If Geddy uses chorus, it's less than the amount in Jeff's recordings, but nonetheless a nice tone

How about string differences? Are you using roundwounds on all of these?
