I love Mustangs--my first new Fender, back in '68 was an Oly White/Tortoiseshell Mustang.
But, with all due respect, I could never understand why Fender put those tacky racing stripes on guitars...and the red one on an orange finish is a blechhhh to my eye.
Fender Japan is making new Mustangs in a beautiful 3-color burst on alder, with the MOP pickguard and black pup covers and switches. They're stunning. I bought one and it's my "main backup" to my CAR CIJ Jaguar. Although people have characterized the single-coils on these as "weak", mine cuts through when the Jag fails, and that's saying a lot.

Aw, I always liked their "Competition" colors.
If I ever went shortscale it'd probably be a Mustang. Glenn Hughes got a monster tone out of one on the "You Are The Music, We're Just The Band" record.
And the dude from Canadian power popsters Sloan, used to use one pretty frequently...

I understand. I think it's got something to do with generational perceptions. I think if you were a teenager when these came out or when you first saw an old competition one, it registered as "cool".
I was in my early 20s when they stuck that stripe onto the Mustang, and I thought it was bastardization of the worst kind.
Just two different opinions about the looks of a great little guitar.

I was a year away from my first breath when that guitar was manufactured!
And I will say the the red/orange combo is probably my least fave...
And also to clarify, the Hughes & Sloan comments from my earlier post refer to the Mustang BASS.

That guitar would look perfect resting against a 1969 Schwinn orange Stingray with 3-speed shifter and matching orange sparkle banana seat.

A guy I played with in 1967 had a nice white Mustang, I also hated the stupid looking racing stripes. They were never really popular back when they were first made, were known as a budget Fender, including the basses which were short scale. I think they were trying to cash in on the popularity of the Ford Mustang, trying to jumpstart sales or somthing, although Fender would never do anything tacky to increase sales, now would they?

Paul,you raise an interesting guestion as to the color of my guitar.When I bought this guitar from a store in Texas they said that it is the original finish and it appear to be original to me.I think that it is Fiesta Red that has faded.Who knows.

I have never seen a Fiesta Red Mustang fade that much. Early Fiesta Red guitars (through about '65, in my experience), yes, but not the later ones. I believe that the paint was reformulated before Mustangs were introduced.
I just thought it was a really nice refinish, judging from the photos. If the previous owner had the inclination and budget to have a pro sign painter do the lettering on it, it would be reasonable to assume that, if it is a refin, it was also done by a pro.

Maybe you are right.When I bought the guitar the seller listed it as original finish with painted on graphics.I once sent Honky a photo of this guitar and recieved this email in reply(my edit):
"thats f***in' right arm.
i used to say sh** to him about his pink guitar and he used to get uptight and say its coral.
we're planning on a 10 year honky show.
carson, lance, and me for the first set then current honky next.
i'll check with lance on photos of that mustang.

I had a '66 Coral Jazzmaster. Experts (so-called) would me it was faded Fiesta Red, and I kept a set of photos handy of the guitar with the guard slipped to the side, showing the unfaded paint under the guards, nail holes, etc..
That usually sent them away grumbling.
I had painted it myself, in nitro, back in '82, to match my Coral-and-Shadow Gray '55 Nomad wagon...
