But a few things first...

First, it's a fireglo. Not my ideal colour. In fact, that's the colour I want least.

Second, it has a chip right on the back of the neck. Now, my Dano has a chip on the back of it's neck, but it's much higher up than the chip on this Ricky. Third, it's in The Netherlands! That means that I can't have a quick play.

The shop is selling it for €1595, if it didn't have the chip, it would be €1799. I'm not sure if I should go for this. On one hand, it's a left handed Rickenbacker 620/12 for sale!!! There aren't many of those about. But on the other hand, it's damaged in a place that could irritate when playing and it's not in the colour I want.

Any help would be apreciated if you want to give me any in making the right choice.

That's a lot of money for that particular guitar, and I agree that the positioning of the chip is going to be one that you can feel. That's always a problem. Hey, if it's bothering you now, it's going to bother you a whole lot more once you've shelled out cold hard cash for the thing. If it were me, I wouldn't buy it. I'd much rather order a new one and then wait the requisite 9 mos. for delivery of a flawless instrument.

Is it a finish chip, or a gouge into the wood. The first is fairly easily repairable.

I agree with Kris,a clearcoat chip is pretty easy to fix...Is it a chip in the clearcoat,or is the actual color missing as well?If it goes down to the wood,personally I'd pass,especially for that kind of cash..

It looks like a brand new one but had been damaged while moving it or something. The bare wood is showing and the paint has been chipped right off. Maybe I should haggle with the price a bit as if I buy it now, it would probably cost me more to get it repaired than if I just bought a new one (which would mean I'd wait 3 years for it!!!).

Perhaps ask Paul or Dale about the chip and how much that might cost to be repaired in the UK. Paul for example may even know someone who can effect the repair in the near vicinity.

Then at least you can take an informed decision.

As long as the wood isn't gouged or dented, this could still be repaired at home using a little clear nail polish, then wet sanding with extremely fine grit sandpaper, and bringing back to a luster with rubbing compound and wax.
Visually, you would still see where the chip was, but at least you wouldn't feel it when you play.

Chip, shmip. Are you going to play it or hang it on the wall as art?

If they give you a good break on the price and you're gonna end up putting your own dents in it....

Oh, I would play it non stop!!!!! Right now I'm asking if they will bring the price down on it because I still think £1000 is just too much for a damaged item, even if it is a Rickenbacker. But, ooh, it is tempting to just go for it.. even though it is fireglo... and damaged..... This is tricky!!!

Update: I'm going for it. Wrong colour and damaged.... But too rare to turn down. And I can sell it if a better one comes along.
