I've seen some recommendations mentioned in other threads, but I thought I'd ask here. Now that it's only days until Santa Ana time, does anyone have any recommendations as far as digital cameras in the $300-600 range? I've got a 5.0 MP but I just want to step up a notch or so....

Very nice for what I need. It takes real nice sports pics as well.

I just bought two Canon S3 Si cameras for our office, (I'm Staff Photographer for a motorcycle magazine publisher), and the Canons are great!
6 megapixel, 36 to 400mm optical zoom with "image stabilizer", AA batteries, macro and super macro modes, full auto and manual capabilities and many other features that made it a clear "best choice" for our applications. The editorial staff uses them for event coverage, technical articles, travel stories and many other things. I believe it's also rated the best buy for consumers by a number agencies.

I also own the Canon S3 and I love it. The 4 AA batteries make a big difference in these cameras as far as flash recharging. I had a Canon A80 that I liked alot. It had 4 AAs and was pretty quick. I dropped it though and had to finally get another one. I tried a few different 2 AA camera and they were very slow. I ended up spending more than I really wanted for the S3 but it is a really great camera.

Another good thing about it is a better video mode that my old camera. I can take videos on this one that look pretty good on a standard TV screen (640x480 resolution). I had thought about getting a digital video camera that takes stills, but the cost was high and the still features weren't that great. I don't do video much, so this S3 was a great way to get great stills and decent video.

I got a 1 gig flash card with it, which supports up to 11 minutes of video. Then I just copy the video directly to VHS as well as uploading with pix to my PC.

I have the Fuji F10. It won all kinds of awards.. I think the updated model is the F30. It works well with natural light. They're under $400 I believe.
