4003 - too much hum for recording.

so having recently converted to rics, i brought it to the studio for our new recording sessions. however, the bass was producing so much 'hum' (60k?) it was unusable for recording.

are 4003 fundamentally noisy? we tried re-grounding it, switched the polarity of the top p/u - the strange thing was, when the pickguArd assembly was turned upside down, the hum was significantly reduced.

any tips would be much appreciated.

They are single coil and will pick up neon lights and some hum but not as bad as a Strat for example. I've never had noise problems in a studio, maybe in a club with a million lights. They are not hum cancelling like Fenders pickups are (wound opposite each other) You can also shield them so they are dead quiet with copper tape, I've done that before. It sounds like you may have a wiring or a ground problem though.
