Mercyful Fate

Why is it that just about every metal band I love has to have a Rick bass in it?
I just got into this band after getting used to King Diamond's voice. He sounds strained on "Evil" but "Curse of the Pharaohs" sounds good.
Timi Hansen seems to be playing a JG 4001/4003 with a black pickguard. I guess this was from 1993. Good ole youtube.

Fate fan dating back to the Brats demo.
Can't say I know much of their later work, but the first two albums are classic.

Tony, you'd be getting old if you knew of Mercyful Fate before they were Mercyful Fate.

Lol, Jeff. I need to learn some of their stuff. The bass is very interesting. I'm going to try and make my drummer friend learn "Pharaohs".
Also it's pretty damn hard to sing like King Diamond. Not the falsetto. I can do that. It's the 4 different voices in one line kind of thing. Like his demon growl, his falsetto, his yodel and a whisper. Such as a lot of the stuff on "Them".
You guys know that when King knows he's gonna suck he signals the sound guys to hit his backing track? I think that's what happens in "Evil".

If you are just getting into Fate, I'd suggest the demo CD (The Beginning?). It has the Brats stuff (which was rewritten to be more 'evil" later) - Death Kiss is a favorite, but those early versions of Pharoahs, Burning the Cross, Return Of The Vampire (Wampire) and A Corpse Without Soul are great. The production was much heavier than that flangy guitar sound they got on the first couple of albums, and King's falsetto was more powerful.
I got into these guys back in the early 1980s, but most of the demos were chopped or missing tracks. The whole black metal thing just got too silly after a while, although the first couple of Venom albums pretty much encapsulated the genre (and were enough as far as I was concerned).
