4001CS -I almost hate to touch it

I received my 4001CS a week ago; it's so nice and so beautiful and so solid and perfectly new that I can hardly bring myself to play it. I thought this would be my new "play it till I die machine", but now I don't want to mess it up.
My other Rick is a white Tuxedo which is in great shape though happily used and somewhat yellowed (I'm the original owner), but I have to say that it's like a chevy compared to this new "mercedes"-like Squire Bass.
By the way, I bought it from Coolbasses.com in Los Angeles. They were great to deal with and it came well packed and as described. Shipped overnight to Boston without incident.
Now if I could just get one scratch on it somewhere, I could stop worrying and start playing.

remember you bought it, its yours to play.
My Rick has black marks burnt into the white finish from an ill fitting case (previous owner stuff). People still think its amazing to look at

I know the feeling Jason, my CS lives in its case when not being recorded. I love a beat up old guitar, but when I have something new, I like it to stay that way.

My 4001CSLH has gigged in every seedy bar here in Austin. It's already played 2 gigs this week with 2 more this weekend. Lots of compliments on it's tone every night. I've had it since '92, it's been all over the country, still looks good except for some chrome rubbed off the horseshoe.

Here's an update: A few days after receiving my CS, I found one advertised in my area (naturally, after years of looking!!) So I checked it out anyway. It was really nice, never gigged, and very reasonably priced. I must be nuts, but I couldn't pass up the deal. So now I have two of these suckers. I can keep the best one for posterity and gig with the other. Trouble is, I can't tell anyone else, or I'll be kicked out!!
(now where can I hide one of these in the house?)......

Jason, I have a closet on the ground level where all my Ricks are. Put a lock on it and only I have the key. Whenever a Rick has to sneak in the house, it goes there. My excuse to put on the lock was to protect them against burglars; I never said a word about protecting them from a wife, which was the real reason.

being afraid to play it (out of the house) is one reason I'm considering selling my 4005. Used to gig with it constantly in the '80's, but now, I play guitar.

Like Jeff, I have a '68 4001 that doesn't get played as much as it deserves (at least the case is in the rehearsal studio, though), as I'm inclined to baby it (but when it does come out to play ... what a dream bass!). And this weekend, I played my "backup" Ric bass ('93 4003) for the first time in ages (since it was a gig with an out-of-town band, I could leave it at their rehearsal studio since I was commuting for rehearsals) ... I felt quite guilty about having neglected it for months. Fortunately, my '78 4001 gets played to death (and takes most of the abuse).

I can relate. I have a '98 V63 that I tend to baby. It did make it to two gigs but doubtful it will see another. This of course will not wind up in a closet or under a bed as I do alot of studio work. But when rowdy drunks start jumping up on stage later in the evening I get nervous. If I owned a CS it definately would never be gigged!

Im the same way with my 4004 II , I like to play it at outdoor gigs when I know we have plenty of room, but in a small club I'll take one of my "expendable" basses.

When I sold my 4003 in last August, it was in real mint condition. Yes, I did baby it. Same thing for the StingRay 5 I am about to sell on Saturday. Quite as new.
The 4001CS I'm about to pick up has minor issues : some matted varnish on the side, little yellowed finished, etc. But, hey, that's a player. I'm not buying it for trading, but for playing. And it won't be any kind of problem to gig with it...
