A question for anyone out there in the know... I noticed that one set of vintage knobs I have is set by smaller hex screws as opposed to the slightly bigger single-slot screws. Is one design earlier than the other? Is the hex nut set inaccurate? Enlightenment please. Thanks.

The "hex screws" are called Allen head set screws.
They are generally later use than the slotted head set screws.

I 2nd Paul's comment, especially when we're discussing the Rogan TV knobs...

Just for clarity's sake, I'm talking about these:

Comments still apply. But as for a "hard" changeover date when the Allens started, I don't think there is one.

All of my current production "Vintage"style knobs have slotted set screws.
