What are the tonal characteristics of these basses? I've always thought they were cool looking but have never seen one in real life. By the way, theres a beaut on E-bay right now.

Hi Scott
My 4005
http://www.sonic.net/~claudel/4005/
has had a rough life but is feelling much better now.
It has a warm "woody" sound, even unplugged and
sounds great thru a variety of amps but seems to want
to run away at higher volumes. That can be a good thing.
Not as "piano" sounding to me as the solid body Rics.

Check out a group called "The Stone Roses." THe bass player uses a 4005 on much of their first album. TO me, that particular bass sound has a lot in common with later Paul McCartney/Beatles, rather than Geddy Lee or Chris Squire.

Yes, I like Mani's sound in the the 1st album.
Deep ambient lows with good definition. Just listen to the 1st song "I wanna be adored" in that and you hear the 4005 immediately when it faded in. But of course it was Mani's talent that really shone through---simple, melodic, effective bass riffs that went through the song.
Funny I was just watching their video collection the other day and kept wondering "where is that Jackson Pollackish finished 4005 now?" As Mani plays the 3000 and 3001 mostly at present.
Claude, Beautiful 4005!!!

Claude, You have an absolute beauty there! I usually don’t get that feeling over 4005’s but I have to say I get it when I look at yours.
By the way - a perfect example of the walnut wings looking good under a transparent color.
Great job and good luck
Cheers!
