See-through pickguards

Hey Paul-

I have a nice 4001C64S. But the pickguard is kinda translucent. I can see the route for the wires to the Toaster as well as the control cavity through the guard.

I know one way to fix this would be to remove the pickguard and paint the back of it white.

My question is: What would be the best paint to use on it?

Would your standard Testor's Gloss White be a good choice?

White Spray can of lacquer from Home Depot or Ace Hardware works fine

would the paint transfer onto the finish under the scratchplate?

Not if it's totally dry. It takes only a 24 hour period for lacquer to dry if not applied to thick at one time. 2 coats applied 15 minutes apart will work.

What's important to remember here is something I am constantly drilling into my modelmaking students:

90% of spray can paint sold at Ace Or HD or your typical hardware or paint store, is actually enamel. Enamel is slow to dry completely, and will show pressure marks from the screws and the edges of the cavity.

Therefore, if you're gonna use a spray can for this, make sure it says "lacquer" on the label, and dust it on in fairly light coats until you've got the guard covered.

BTW, Krylon is not lacquer. It's a weird combination of solvents. I call it "lacquer-enamel" and avoid it for this sort of work.

That is why I posted the word: lacquer.

Thanks for this thread. I got a can of lacquer gloss white from ACE Hardware in Denver today and if I learn anything later, I'll share it.
