EDIT: please ignore the thread title... Greg Lake is playing the acoustic guitar (duh!). Who is playing the Ric?

ok I figured it out ... that is Peter Giles ... He was the bass player in the transitional lineup of King Crimson in 1970 ...

yep a 60s 4001 ... the next bass player was Gordon Haskel and then Boz Burrell and then John Wetton and then Tony Levin ...

It looks like a 64RM with the dark FG.

Great bass...now, about that beard...

So that's after "In the Court of the Crimson King" . . . during "In the Wake of Poseidon" tour, when Greg Lake was kicked off bass, and just got vocal and rhythm guitar duties.

Despite the Ric, Lake's bass playing on their first album was far better than Giles' on the second. It just gave the music energy that seemed a bit lacking on the second album . . . though "Cat Food" is awesome. Didn't know Giles used a Ric, though.

Wish someone could produce a recording of the night Chris Squire, Bill Bruford and Fripp jammed on "Cat Food" at Fripp's house...egad, the mind reels...

That might be pre-Court of the Crimson King.

What I'm thinking is this might have been immediately after the Giles, Giles and Fripp period (1968-69) when Lake first joined up and before Peter Giles left. Remember GG&F had an album out "The Cheerful Insanity of GG&F" before Lake and McDonald joined up. I thought that they tried Lake with them before Peter left and Lake ended just replacing Peter Giles.

I could be totally wrong though.

For the record, Michael Giles is a lost wonder. An incredibly amazing drummer. It's a shame the world didn't hear much more from him.

you may be right the song "Cat Food" appeared on the 1970 album "In the wake of Poseidon" but there was an earlier version ... it may be on the box set Epitaph which covers 1969 to 1997 ...

The pic is from Top Of The Pops were they mimed the single "Cat Food" in 1970. Yes, really!Image
There never was a "In The Wake Of Poseidon" tour, or a "Lizard" tour, those lineups on the album never made it, i.e. Gordon Haskell quit three days after "Lizard" was completed and superdrummer Andy McCulloch soon after. "Poseidon" lineup was very temporary from the start 'cause Ian McDonald and Mike Giles had already handed their resignations at the end of the "In The Court" tour and Lake was about to quit for ELP. Lake and Giles helped Fripp to complete the album.
The only lineup to tour after the very first one was Fripp-Colins-Wallace-Boz-Sinfield. The "Islands" band.

I think Peter Giles plays Fender Jazz on "In The Wake Of Poseidon", could be Lake's Fender. It has a different sound to his playing on "The Cheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles and Fripp" and "McDonald and Giles" albums which clearly were played on a Rick.

Greg Lake did own an RM1999 and I tried to buy it in 1981 from Guitar Player of Rochdale at their other shop in Oldham.
The guy who was managing us at the time had plenty of money but no idea of vintage guitar values and wouldnt stump up the £750 I needed.
At the time I owned John Lodge's bass from Moody Blues days but the neck was warped and I wanted to trade it in.
The guy at the shop was quite sure about it being ex Greg Lake and it was a nice bass as I remember with its original case too.
The nut needed some work as one of the slots was worn low but otherwise a slim neck and totally original.
Dont know where it ended up and cant remember noting the serial number.
Having sold DH163 a year earlier (Wints has her now)I was desperately trying to find a replacement.
Hope that fills in some gaps for you.
Pete.
