Oh yes, the ever popular Mudenbacker mod. Lack of low end in the 4001/3 was a common player complaint in the 70's and early 80's so people resorted to all kinds of butchery to remedy the situation.

Well, they didn't have the internet back then, some may remember. Perhaps it wasn't so common knowledge in the 70's as it is nowadays.

Is that a genuine 4001 or a copy? Some of the copies made in the early '70's had an EB -style humbucker.
Hattler's 4001 had also an added Jazz mick near the neck PU as seen on this clip:

EDIT: Ah, forget it, it's a fracking sticker!

Phew, maybe it was better that way. Anyway, a nice clip except those strange mimics.
A temporary mod I think.

People back in the day who put one of those large Gibson EB bass humbuckers in the neck must have had to do some MAJOR routing to fit it...they are sort of mounted similarly to the stock Ric bridge pickup (which also requires an excessively deep route in its own right)..the pickup itself isn't that deep, but the mounting hardware requires a ridiculous amount of accomodation to fit.
