4003JG Payback!

My best friend, Tim, bass player/co-conspirator in my band have been pals since our 20's. We were a couple of broke dudes sharing an apartment, and singing together.

Though underemployed and underpaid, one day he walks in with a new matching pair of Ibanez acoustics. One a gift for me.

Later, we got a band together and played various L.A. Venues, he on my 4001JG.

Things change, pals drift apart.

Then in the 90's, we started playing together again, and formed our current band. He's using my Alembic bass. Once I asked him to try out my V63, and the drummer and I almost fainted, it added so much to our sound.

Last November, I ordered a spankin' new 4003JG. Kept it a secret. Asked Mike Parks to have it delivered directly to Tim.

Well, it arrived at Tim's house Tuesday. He still had no idea, thought I was hiding a purchase from my wife (a logical conclusion). He had been wanting a peek all evening. Finally, around 9 pm (I was working late) his son, whom I'd let in on the surprise a few days earlier at the Petty concert, told him the story. He opened it. He actually mentioned to me how good it smelled!

Talk about a slew of happy emails. The guy was bowled over. I've been filling him in on my limited Rick knowledge since.

Tonight, I'll see it and hear it for the first time at rehearsal.

And Saturday, it'll get it's first gig. I'm sure our sound quality will go up a couple notches. I'll be playing my 660/12, 650 and 1997 RI, so it'l be a Rickfest!

Pictures to be posted tomorrow. Expect to see me crying and trying to pull it out of his hands!

Great story Jerry. I can't think of a better way to brighten a bassist's day!

Jerry, that was an awesome thing to do. I'd like to hear something off The Shamus Twins done live with it. Like "Hello Hello". My 4003 sounded great when I played along with the song, so I can only imagine what it'd sound like when the part is played right! :D

Congrats to both and pics, yes. Encourage him to frequent the forums.

Ack! I didn't think about the 4005! Wouldn't have had to wait! Image

Good rehearsal, that is a bass with a lot of presence!

Everyone was impressed with the sound, solidness of the bass, build quality.

You'll have to direct him to the "Scratch-X & Zymol" section to keep it looking nice & shiny.

Is it an '06, Jerry? Vintage tone selector? Wonder if it's got a slim neck!

Yes, '06, tone selector. To be honest, we just played and didn't explore much of that. I told him about it, but he's really non-technical, so for now, we haven't tried it.

Also, this morning I realize I didn't even try it out! I'll try it Saturday, before our show. I'm curious too, slim neck or not!

Scratch-X and Zymol for sure. It was all fingerprinted before he put it away, and he didn't even wipe it down! I wipe my guitars down between songs, even during songs!

We posed for the pix after rehearsal, when we were pooped.
