Ampeg head

has anyone used the ampeg B500DR 500 watt head, please let me know what you think.

Having tube and tube/SS Ampeg heads, and noting the family sound, I would assume (yeah, I know!) tonally it would retain the Ampeg sound. Even the all SS heads still sound Ampeg. It is probably like the B2RE but with the 4 savable tone memories and more oomphf.

i'm due to receive one and an ampeg b140hlf cab soon. this will be my first ampeg reg. i've heard rics and ampegs sound good together. i'll know soon enough. thanks for the replies.

Being a bit of an Ampeg Guy I can maybe give some ideas.
I saw that Musicians Friend has that head on sale – took a look at the pics. My guess – from the stats is that it will sound a lot like the old B2 solid state.
I normally use a SVT4-Pro head with the 6x10HLF cab. I also have the 4x10 cab and a 1x18 – both HE I think. The 4x10 is basically half an SVT 8x10 with a horn added – no ports. The 1x18 is a forward 18 with a port on the bottom.
One key item with Ampegs is the cabinet choice. In the “Classic Series” line as example the 4x10HLF that Dave (above) has puts out more low end but less mid growl than the 6x10HLF that I have. Both have more low end than either the regular 4x10 or my 1x18. The key with the SVT4Pro has a variable input with an LED to show when it peaks. To get maximum gnarl but stay clean is to use the variable input so the LED just glimmers from time to time but does not really go red – if it does the output section peaks really easy.
Not sure which cab you have. But you may end up using some sort of pod to get the additional voicing you want.
Still – Ampegs are cool. As long as they still make them in the USA at least – since they got bought out by Behringer (China bound now?)

I just checked one out over at MF. Looks to have plenty of power, the tone control layout looks pretty basic. Im not sure if the "preset" concept is all that important to me, but some people may think its cool.
Price isnt bad either.

the enclosure is an ampeg b410hlf, i'm looking forword to the presets because i'm using a 4003 ric and a warwick corvet standard.
i was going for b2re head but couldn't pass up the price on the b500br head. the amp is due in today but the cab will be in monday (rats).i was looking at the behringer 450 watt amp but wasn't too sure about them. hope i made the right choice...

The Ampeg will be a better and more reliable head then the Beringer.
