Hi everbody, hope this post finds you all well.
I have a question regarding the Magnets in my Pickups. I've read that storing you bass next to string Magnetic fields adversaly affects the pickup magnets. I usually store my Bass leaning up(in its case)against a 2x15 Bass Cab, would the strong magnetic pull do any harm to my '04 4003?? Like degauss them or just suck the life outa them.

Steve, I think you'll be fine. Outside of the cabnet the field should not be sufficiantly strong to harm anything. It's like people saying don't put video tapes near a TV.

Usually, degaussing one magnet with another requires that one magnet be repeatedly moved over the other, so you should be OK, but if you want that extra level of feeling secure, store it away from the cab.

I found out that I had to have my left Klipsch Forté II speaker at least 15" away from my television: any closer, and it messed up the colors because the speakers' magnets were strong enough to deflect the electrons in the picture tube.

Just don't store your old cassette tapes near the cabs.

Hi all, thanks for the replys. Funny you guys mention the TV thing, my Rig is about 3foot away from my PC but when I move my Rig away for Gigs or whatever my PC screen goes all purple and weird.

Steve - then the speaker magnets in your cab are affecting the flyback on your monitor and slightly magnetizing it, thus the purple. Not a good situation. I was working on a stereo speaker box one Saturday when the kids were young and after removing a woofer and setting it on the floor, the kids asked why the Smurfs were purple!

When the purple happens, after removing the magnetic source, power off then back on the tv or monitor and the built-in degnauss circuit should turn things back to normal.

would that happen with plasma sets?

The classic degaussing story (if there is such a thing) was about Andy Summers of the Police having to have his Tele pups re-magnetized after many trips on a train. The strong field from the traction motors was supposed to be the culprit.

There were actually purple smurfs on certain episodes.

Plasma's should be fine. They are not scanned phosphor. With a close magnet, you are distorting the electron ray's scanned path and allowing the wrong phosphor bits to be energized.

But I could make the Smurf go from blue to purple by moving the woofer! The kids had a ball with it. I didn't tell them it was the magnet - they were bright enough at that age to find the Playskool horseshoe magnet and bar and have fun anytime....

I don't remember how I did it but I screwed up a color TV so bad with speaker magnets once it took months to straighten out.
