Burning G

Paul: I have a friend who has a Gretsch 6210W with the Gretsch G painted on the finish.

He would like to have the G burned in to the finish as in more recent reissues.

Can you do this sort of thing? How would you go about it? Should I lend him my woodburning set or is this routed and then painted?

It's CNC routed and painted, then varnished over.

I would suggest a couple of hours spent with a Dremel tool with a ball-type cutter about 1/4" diameter, Dremel #114 or #134.

He can use the painted G as a guide, routing out to about 3/32" depth. Doesn't have to be perfect. He then should sand the routed channel with rolled-up #150 sandpaper, and finish it off with a careful application of some gloss black paint. Or he can use black latex acrylic artist's paint and varnish over that, just in the area of the G to seal it. Two coats, please.
