Does a 4003 suffer from single coil hum problems like (for example) a Fender Jazz does? I did a search of the forum and didn't find any mention of it.

No it shouldn't hum at all unless there's something wrong with the wiring. Maybe a loose ground.

all single coil instruments have the hum ... that is a characteristic of single coil pickups ... humbuckers have 2 sets of coils ... one set is reverse wound ... that cancels the hum ...

but if the ground gets disconnected then it will hum louder ...

My Rick basses have never hummed anywhere near as loud as any Jazz basses i've owned. Never enough to be problematic either.

Mine used to hum until I taught it the lyrics.
sorry
Certain lighting in the room will bring out the hum - like dimmer switches, florescent or neon lights.

It will also hum if you are too close to the amp.

Please step away from the SVT stack!

Randy - you beat me to it man! Good one!

"Please step away from the SVT stack!"

Ain't that the truth! I've shielded mine and it will still hum if I lean into the head.

Jacob - I have both an SVT 3 Pro and a 2 Pro. Think about getting an 3 Pro used off eBay - you can find the early 90's model (blue SVT II Pro writing) for around $500. Not quite the punch factor of the 300W of tubes, but with a 4 ohm cab it puts out 450W and has the same tube front end and driver section, and if you boost the bottom 3 sliders of the graphic eq. you get pretty close to the low end.

Here is an early 2 Pro for a decent opening bid:

3 Pro starting at $400:
