Mr. Moderator (or Mr. Hall)... What happened to the JangleBox thread I started? There were some links posted by other members using the JangleBox that were very helpful and when I went to give them another listen... the whole thing was gone. What gives???

That seems to be a touchy subject here and over at RIC. From what I gather the design of the Janglebox is stolen intellectual property. I could be wrong but that seems to be the gist of the conversations about it.

There were some suggestions made by a "significant individual" that perhaps the J-box is stolen intellectual property. Such an assertion was not made outright, and no proof was given to support any outright assertion, so at this point it seems to be much ado about nothing. My own feeling is that something that makes a Rickenbacker sound better and even more desireable is a good thing and ought to be appreciated as such... But I'm just a customer so who cares what I think.

If the inference here is that the Janglebox design is stolen from the 360-12RM, then wouldn't the fact that the original chip used in that circuit is no longer available mean that Janglebox circuit is a new design? It would have to different. If the "significant individual" believes that the sound it creates is "intellectual property" then the lawsuits, and injunctions in the music industry would never stop. If I happen to program my effects processor to duplicate that sound, will the thought police come over to my house and confiscate it?
I love my 360-12, and I have a great deal of respect for the "significant individual", in the quality of his product, his contributions to this forum, and his pursuit of those that violate his real copyrights. However, to me this is a bit of a stretch. If the Jangle box people had used the same chip, and copied the Pc board, that would be one thing, but "intellectual property"? Come on.

Why would Peter delete a thread about the Janglebox? Seems like a pretty darn relevant subject around here.

I imagine the thread was deleted at the request of one or both parties involved in the "discussion," and I respect that they'd prefer the discussion to be private rather than out in the open like it was (albeit only for short time). So I imagine Brian is right (this thread will perhaps be gone soon, too...).

My Janglebox will be delivered tomorrow, btw. I've been running a Digitech Main Squeeze, which is considered to be a mid-line run-of-the-mill compressor/sustainer. I can't wait to get the J-box going and experience all the highly lauded tones through my 325-into-Vox AC50-into-Weber Alnicos. After the 325 my Gretsch Tenny is next in line. Woo hoo!!!

Did it get heated or something? I must have missed it.

Obviously, this is Peter's forum and he's free to sanitize it as he sees fit, but I find it rather frustrating for those of us who put time and effort into making thoughtful contributions to see them just vanish. Perhaps a bit of editing and a polite request to the parties involved to take that part of the discussion elsewhere would have been better for the common good. We may only be guests here, but what kind of forum would it be without the input and opinions of it's members? If anyone needs any of the clips I posted, they're all in here and all of the 12-string tracks use the box in one configuration or another.

The law and it's application can be a funny thing at times. Did any of you know that Harley Davidson had, at one point, set out to copyright the sound of it's engine? They were denied, but it just goes to show how touchy people can be about certain things.

I build guitars for my own personal use and likewise stirred up a lot of controversy because they were specifically based on the 360 shape. It seems that these "problems" where musical gear is concerned, seem to be "Rickenbacker exclusive" problems. People on all the other music forums openly share their ideas, projects and skills in a supportive atmosphere. They do however draw the line where someone attaches a "brand name" to one of their homebuilt creations. Nothing will rile the Fender related forum people like someone asking "Where do I get a Fender decal to put on my project guitar?" And rightfully so. This forum and the Official Ric Forum take that attitude to new heights however.

Mind you, I'm not complaining. Just stating what's out there.

The thread was getting a bit "involved" between John Hall and Steve from Janglebox, so I imagine Peter removed the thread because it wasn't really suitable for a public forum. The matter that these gentlemen need to sort out would be better addressed privately between the two of them.
At this point, I don't believe there is any problem discussing the Janglebox compressor on this forum as other related threads remain intact.

There are many interesting points expressed here and if it seems frustrating from your perspective may I say that I feel the same way. Thus begins my epistle.

While initial comments regarding the use of a particular product such as the JangleBox are reasonable and welcomed, when the topic of the thread changes to one of conflict its impact on the participants takes on a whole new form and inevitably a life of its own. In such situations the original intent of the questions posed may become lost in the shuffle.

At this point endless issues may enter into the discussion that, while entertaining to some, do not serve the RickResource Forum, or anyone else on the planet, well. When a moderator comes upon a long thread with numerous strong and differing points of view, which one should be edited, who gets the reminders, how much time should be spent editing comments? When only a single post or two is deleted then one often gets the opportunity to respond through email for a few more rounds. The thread goes south and my inbox may fill up with many comments before I have even read the thread. Of course, then there is the explanation at the end of the day which is now before you.

Before long the topic has nothing to do with the JangleBox but rather concerns about free speech, the loss of posted information, or other personal concerns about posts being removed in the past. It is only a matter of time before personality issues emerge and the RickResource Forum becomes a therapy session.

Passionate posts about products are one thing but when the discussion becomes too heated there can often be bad feelings all around. All in the pursuit of ... fun, enjoyment, relaxation, entertainment?

This is why topics are removed. To try to fix them takes an inordinate amount of time, this response being an illustration. Talking about the jangle of the Rickenbacker or the jangle of the box is first rate in my books, but the jangle of the jungle is far less desirable. That is what day jobs are for.

While time heals all wounds, arguably time also wounds all heels. It is my job to step in before the latter takes hold.

To those who have lost information, I apologize. Your comments and your time are important and I never take the removal of a post or topic lightly.

Now what is it about the JangleBox that makes the Rickenbacker experience more fulfilling?

I was looking forward to checking out the sound clips that were posted there. I read the thread at work where "you tube" and similar links are restricted through a fire wall. When I got home I couldn't find it and thought I was going nuts. If the member who posted the samples would email me the link I would be appreciative. Thanks

Peter, I am often impressed by you and moderators of other forums in the way these situations are handled. It's greatly appreciated.

Umm...I could swear that I posted my comments about other good sounding compressors - Keeley and Rt 66 - this morning and it's gone now. Maybe my connection timed out and it didn't register?
