No longer a rookie!

I've read with interest throughout the forums here about strings. Last week I decided to replace the strings on my 360/12

Well, my 360/12 is an 02 model that I bought last August. It was brand new in the case. It had the original strings when I bought it. I thought about changing strings at the time, but I didn't. It sounded just awesome anyway.

After much thought, I decided on a set of Pyramid Golds. I've read a lot of good and not so good on the forums here about Pyramids. I bit the bullet to find out for myself.

As this was the first time changing strings, I was sorta-kinda intimidated. Man, it took nearly two hours. But I was extremely careful and took my time. In contrast, I changed strings on my Guild D25/6 acoustic this morning in about 8 minutes.

By the way, can someone point me to a pair of good snips to get down into the headstock for cutting those "buried" strings?

I've got to say, after the 360/12 was strung and tuned up, was I in for a surprise. That baby with the Pyramids just chimed out like there was no tomorrow. I though she sounded good with known dead strings on it. Cripes! The Pyramids, besides just looking pretty over the FireGlo, really ring. I can't believe what I've missed over the last year.

Anyway, at the moment I'm seriously impressed with the Pyramids. We'll see how they hold up.

And after going through process of string change on the 360/12, I consider myself no longer the Rookie!

Hey up mate. Just changing the strings is a good achievement in itself. Now, the method I use when taking the excess off the strings in the slots is when I'm winding them, after they've got a few winds on them, I get the winder so the excess is pointing up out of the slot and either with my fingers or with the pliers, I wiggle the string so it keeps bending at the base of the string until it breaks off, then I continue winding.

Here's my order, with 1 being the low E and 12 being the outer high E:

12 off
12 on
10 off
11 off
10 on
11 on
8 off
9 off
8 on
9 on
Drink beer
6 off
6 on
5 off
4 off
5 on
4 on
3 off
2 off
3 on
2 on
1 off
1 on
Drink beer and play.

I am at about forty minutes. It gets easier, Les. And make sure you slip an empty string envelope under the tailpiece to avoid unnecessary scratches to the finish.

I can't believe you've managed to turn a simple task like changing guitar strings into a game of "Bottles", JDog. Well done! Image

Oh, Oh, Oh ....... a green bottle! A man after my own heart. If it's in a green bottle, I'll drink it!

Hmm. Hey Mr. Hall. Any chance of an "Emerald-Glo" finish? Or maybe an "'Amberboc-Glo"?

... And there was one green bottle, hanging on the wall.... And if that one green bottle, should accidently have the contents drunk out of it..... and accidently be dropped..... There'd be no green bottles, hanging on the wall....

Attaboy, Darren! We can't let memories like that slip away......

Probably a good thing that there wasn't a 12er in need of a restring lying around that night/morning...... I shudder to think what the "Jdog" result might have been!! Image

That might have turned into an interesting drinking game! Of course, I doubt any of us would have been able to get through a whole 12-er (Strings, not bottles).

Too true, John..... 12 bottles would only have lasted around 10 minutes - if that long!!
