Well the C64 has arrived and its killer bass . The neck is so thin it makes a grown man cry . I am not sure if i will be able to get used to the shoes however. That being the case . Does anyone know how to remove Them? It looks like two screws hold them on so do i remove those and put something in between to make up the height difference?

Macca's bass is now without shoes. I've often thought about getting a V63 and taking off/selling the shoes.

Congrats on the C64. They look, sound, and feel really nice.

My vote is always for string access over cool looks. Unfortunately with the C64, taking off the shoes leaves a big ugly hole! I put a 70's pickup surround on my V63 because I don't like the string cutout, but in order to replace the horseshoe surround with the rectangular surround you either have to drill new holes or mount it upside-down like this(center v63):

To remove the 'shoes, you take the whole pickup assembly out(4 little screws), then remove the pickup from the surround using the 2 big screws. Remove the screws holding the pickup to the backing plate and replace the horseshoes with washers or some other spacer of similar thickness. Save horseshoes, re-assemble, and:

ROCK OUT LIKE MOTORHEAD!

Uhhh...Bob? Didn't you already have a v63 that you could have done that with?!

Is Macca's bass really sans shoes now? I know it was in the 70's.

As far as I know this is the accurate version ... during the 60s Sir Paul's bass had an original horseshoe ... in the 70s it got a overwound high gain ... today it has a reissue horseshoe pickup ...

Keep the shoes it looks better. At first I removed the cover of my treble pup, but later I put it back and learned to play with cover on the bass. It looks so much better with the cover and in your case the shoes. A Rickenbacker is a strange beast, and it takes some time to get used to it.... BTW I have a 4003 FG.

Jeff, Yep, I did. Just didn't think about it at the time! Hindsight is always much clearer...

Really liked what Ken S did with the last two V63 that he sold on the 'bay.

Actually Bob, Paul's bass has had a reissue HS in it since the late 80's.

Didn't know Sir Paul had put his shoes back on. Why did they come off in the first place?

The original horseshoe pickup degaussed and would not take a charge so it got replace by an overwound high gain pickup ...

Well...... I took the shoes off today . I shimmed the pickup with washers . worked out really well . I would trade these shoes for a nice set of 4001 pickups . I'd also be willing sell them if any of my Rickenbrothers need them . 200.00 for the pair .
