I'm thinking of pulling the trigger, but I'm concerned about the finish. Jack plate s/n and TRC check out, but that finish sure looks like monty brown to me.
What do you guys think?

It's hard to tell,, but I say it is just a dark photo and a heavily amber-ed Fireglo.

Autumnglo can be very dark.

The one in the auction looks way too red. It could be a bad pic though.

Mine is a little lighter but still not as red. I think the one on Ebay is FG.

Ted, isn't that Mr."X" above? Image

I'm really confused. Now, I see much more red like FG. Damn!

Yup! That is Mr. X with his prized '76 4001LH. The next owner of that bass will have to pry it from his cold, dead fingers. He has owned that bass since it was about a year old. It definitely gets babied.

Hi Bob . Sometimes it is the camera that adds red . I took shots of my Autumn Glo with my old camera that were very redish .( I think you saw those ) I also shot it with a much newer camera and it looked like normal AG . (autumnTurtleGlo) Good luck with the Hofner Club sale .

Oh man, I love Autumn Glo,

Bob, I think we both are having the same GAS pains. I think we've been looking at the same auctions for about a year now! LOL.

One question, wasn't that tail piece a MID 80's, say 1986-1988 unit only? It has the extra 2 screws to prevent lift on it. Were they available as early as 1984 as the seller states the year of this bass is? Would that help with the color issue?

My 1988 V63 has one of those bridge units and I haven't seen them on earlier 80's basses.

I've seen the two extra screws on 4003's from the beginning (1980) until around 1988, Tony. But I would question the pickguard. The 4003 pickguard was a two-piece from the beginning of the 4003 until 1985.

Jeff:

REALLY???? As early as 1980?

Did the EARLY 4001's (1981 or so) have a one piece guard or do you know if there examples of a 4001 with a 2pc pickguard?

LOL,

Right on the money Bob, I was!

I didn't realize the Monty was gone already. SUCH a sweet blended one too.

HEY, a MILESTONE, 1000 posts.

I wonder if that's a good omen that I'm getting Autumn Glo for Christmas? NOT.

Hey Tony! Congrats on 1000 posts!

Here's an example of a very nice, all original 1980 4003 for you:

Note the two-piece pickguard, seven-screw tailpiece, and
lack of a skunk stripe.

I think you meant to say the LATE 4001s in your above post? The last 4001s(early 80's) were made just as they were in the late 70's.

The 4003's were made to handle the higher-tension roundwound strings, so they got the two extra screws in the tailpiece, and the new truss rod adjustment location under the pickguard. For a few years there in the early 80's they were made alongside the last 4001's that had a skunk stripe, a 5-screw tailpiece, and a one-piece pickguard.

Rock on!
