Where to get early '80s 4003 truss rod?

The kind that adjusts at the body. A friend of mine has a bass that has a rod that is completely stripped, making it unplayable due to the resulting bow in the neck. I assume these aren't the same as the current ones?

Can it be rethreaded? Maybe down a size? I read that somewhere here for a 4001, should work for an early 4003.

There is a thread here in basses within the last three months about fixing 4001 rods which I had done myself by a machinist who had probably never seen a bass before in his life cut about a half an inch off all 4 ends and rethreaded them, this was a suggestion by John Hall, it worked great. the thread is more detailed though, and you can't tell at all that the rods are a little bit shorter. The neck is straight as an arrow now.

Chopping it down and rethreading may be the option, but it's only one rod that is a problem. We tried rethreading it, but there is nothing left to thread, and down a size is some weird thread size. If I knew what kind of steel these were made of, I could easily get a new one fabricated.
