Is it possible that this is the original pick up?

Very likely that is original. Ro-Pat-In/Electro/Rickenbacker did sell pickups to other makers back then.

I have an Electar steel that I date to around '33 with the same pickup (albiet mine is a little rusty). I haven't compared side-by-side with a Frying pan pickup, but it looks identical (not to mention the steel is basically a wooden frying pan in terms of construction...maybe a little more "tear drop" in shape). Can rustle up a pick at some point if there's interest.

Epiphone was one of the companies that used early Ro-Pat-In pickups.

That is a super-cool instrument.
