Does anyone here change off their 4003/1 strings after receiving their instrument? If so why and what do you change to? Thanks.

Yes, because I use flatwounds, not roundwounds. D'Addario Chromes are my favorites.

Steve, I like the RIC strings very much, so I leave them on until they have no brilliance at all left in them.
If I only had a bass or two to restring, I would always use RIC strings on my Rick basses. Since I have a few, I use the D'Addario XL-170 nickel and D'Addatio EPS-170 Pro Steel sets on my 4 string Ricks. I've been using D'Addario strings for about 25 years now. I've never had a set that disappointed me.

John, which gauge of Chromes are you using on your 4005?

Not very heavy ones. 45-95 maybe? A stock set. I received it originally with heavy Pyramids and the result was not favorable IMO.

I still have the set of strings on my 2001 4003 that it came with. still sounds good to me.

I am curious about the DR long life black beauties or red devils. i would also so like to try rotosounds but i Hate the idea of changing the strings

James Jamerson never changed his strings unless one broke. Like he said the " the dirt keeps the funk".

I have tried the DR red devils once. They look cool on my Fireglo 4003, but I wasn't impressed with the sound and changed them.

I'd like to put a set of D'Addario Chromes on my 4001FL, but I never see the lighter gauge offered for sale in a music store. One of these days, I'll have to buy them on line.

I use the Hartke 3 packs. I gig a lot and you can't beat three sets of (actually fairly good) strings for 22$.

I didn't like them, sounded a little too "rubbery" to me, no other way to describe it. The D'Addarios I have been playing forever sound awesome on it, though...

I like the RIC strings. They took a little getting used to since the A & D strings are lighter gauge & lower tension than standard mediums.
They do seem to last quite a while & sound great. They seem to have a particular "voice" that accentuates the mids & mid-highs.
