Mark,
You're NOT alone!
I've been watching it since the auction was started.
The last two like it sold in the $1700.00 range.
The timing MAY have an impact on the selling price.
It sure is sweet.

Is it AG or Walnut?

I have a 78 just like it, but without the speed bumps (fretless). Love it. I was lucky to find it on line at a music store somewhere on the east coast I think pretty cheep. I have a $1,200.00 in it

It's a little strange, the headstock looks like Walnut and the body looks like it has more red in it, like an AG.
I ALMOST went for this one (posted link below) but I researched the sellers feedback and noticed he purchased it for 1K and cleaned it up.
It has a crack where the neck meets the body and the seller didn't mention it in the auction. The machine heads were also changed and I was concerned that the holes might have been made larger for the replacement tuners.
Amazing what a little spit and polish, will do to a bass!
Here is the sellers auction with the cleaned up bass....

Here is the ORIGINAL...compare the pictures. It's hard to believe it is the same bass!

That's a different bass than the first one mentioned, but you're quite right about the cleanup. It's all in the presentation it seems. New tuners, a polish job, & don't show the cracked area = $600.
Edit: I see now you were intending to refer to a different bass. I need another cup of tea...

Sorry I wasn't clear on that Kevin, I just updated my post a bit to make it a little clearer.
It's not you, I'm a bit fried getting ready for Christmas....

Maybe it's time to open a bottle of wine.
AG's always seem to show up on ebay needing some Zymol, so I'm often not sure if they're the satin Walnut or not.

Good idea Kevin!
My lovely wife just handed me a glass of vino,
the tree is lit, "It's a Wonderful Life" is on the TV (DVD that is), and I'm here on my laptop kicking back with my forum buddies.
At times like this, life is good.
