I was looking around for a vintage horseshoe pickup when a dealer I know said he had a 1973 Rickenbacker Horseshoe pickup but it was black (including the surround).

Did Rickenbacker ever issue them in black or was this one likely to have been coated at some point over the years?

Also, assuming it is black, can I have it stripped/refinished/sandblasted or ??? to bring it back to stainless steel goodness?

Anyone have intel on this subject??

Hmmm...if it came from the factory black, it's not a horseshoe pickup but a standard bridge high gain. It's also more likely a product of the 80's than 1973. That being said, don't strip the paint off, just trade the black finish parts to someone for chrome parts as black are discontinued.

'73 horseshoe?

'73 sounds to late to me.
