Another checker-binding question

I'm looking at having my vintage '72 MG refinished. I had tried to do that back when I bought it used, but didn't do a very good job. Anyway, before we start sanding away, I need to know if the checker binding inboard of the white binding is as deep as the white binding? I don't want to sand it and discover the checkers go only a few millimeters deep . . . Aaaaarrgh! Anybody out there know?

Hi Paul,
According to the Bunny Bass interview with Mr. Hall:

"checkerboard" binding that we love so much. This binding is specially made for
Rickenbacker in Germany by glueing hundreds of thin square sheets (each one is
1 meter x 1 meter in size) of alternating black or white plastic on top of each other.
This is repeated until a 1 meter cube is created. This cube is then cut with a laser
into tiny strips to produce the binding you see here. That's a lot of binding.
The cost of each cube? A quarter of a million dollars!"

So I'm pretty sure the black squares are just as deep as the white strip.

Wow! Thanks, Paul. Yes that picture tells it all; maybe a bit more than 1/4" which will work out fine.
