Would anybody know where I might be able to pick up a BLACK, LEFT-HANDED pickguard for a late-70s 4001? I know it's a reach but I thought I'd ask. I'm sure that pickguardian can do one up for me but I want to try the OEM route first....Thank you.

FWIW...I've had pickguardian custom make me a white and a black pickguard for a late 70's 4001(Righty!)
Its REALLY tough to tell the difference between the OEM and the pickguardian.

I'm sure that they are really good, yeah. Acutally pickguardian is probably a better choice for me, for that way I can match up the screw holes perfectly rather than hoping to get it right...

I just had great success with Tony from PG. I suggest you send your guard and have him duplicate it exactly.

I recently bought a NOS 4001 guard 1/2" for my 73, only to find that the cavity is really like a 75 bass. There's no way it will ever fit unless I go drillling...
I think Pickguardian is your best bet John. You may be lucky and find the needle in the haystack, only to find the holes don't match up!

Mr. X has one but he would not be happy if I took it off of his bass. Give Tony a call.

Tony just made me a custom guard for installing HB1's on my 4001. He does a great job.

Well, I'm gonna call Tony and get him to make me a black 'guard off of my original white one. I'll let y'all know how it turns out. While I have the bass apart I'm gonna do the Scratch-X/Zymol treatment.

The bass is all apart now, been Zymol'd, and the original 'guard has been sent to Tony for copying in black. Can't wait to get this cat playing again.

The guy that recently stole my 1980 L/H has one or at least some pawn shop has one along with the nameplate.
