A 4003 with a skunk stripe. That is rare....

It's a lot of money too when you factor in the repaired crack in the neck.

I wonder if they've got the year wrong. It would be easy to tell if they posted the serial number.

Looks to me that the peg head is not quite large enough to be a 4003....I'd say it's a 4001 with a cracked neck that is clearly visible, and not a very good looking repair on the back of the peg head where the finish is worn off. What caused that, a Hip Shot Tuner maybe?

Good catch, Dale. Yep, the headstock is more 70's/early 80's sized.

It's not a 97 with the skunk stripe, and with the skunk stripe there it's probably not a 4003.

The production window is most likely 73-83, hard to pin down with such a small picture.

It doesn't look like it's got chequered binding, and if it had you'd think they'd have mentioned it in the description.

If the pickguard is original, that bass was made between mid-year '77 and the end of production for the 4001 which would be somewhere between 1980 and '81.

it is an ordinary 70s style 4001, not well repaired, and quite expensive too

Funny eBay title

Maybe expensive for the USA but it isn't a bad price for here in England.

Definitely not a '97 4003. Gotta be 1970s or early '80s 4001.

I asked them for the serial number last night via Ebay, we'll see if there's a response.
