I was hoping the Vapors would show up here eventually. I posted some youtube links, etc., on the Ric corporate forum in the "Sightings, Artists, and Events" topic area. Look for the "Turning Japanese" thread. I posted initially to comment on how the "Turning Japanese" riff had been turned into a commercial jingle at least in the U.S.
I've always liked Steve Smith's bass line on "Letter for Hiro". Very vintage tone. I have the "New Clear Days" on CD with bonus tracks, but maybe I should invest in recording number #2 - which was an LP in those days.
I've read that he was a converted drummer, and had one of the older 4003's - but I can't confirm the second one.

Jaymi: If you noticed the 'Jam tone', you shouldn't be surprised. The Jam's bass player Bruce Foxton managed the band, I believe.

He did, at least originally. Around the same time, the Fabulous Poodles (bad name, very good English pop band) were discovered by John Entwistle.
Maybe Foxton felt he had to match The Ox.
