I almost bid on this one, just for the real Rick tailpiece and bridge pickup, until I noticed that this is not a real mid-70s MapleGlo! If I did not know that it was gonna be pulled soon from the Bay, I might have anyway

Fakers get much better than that one. Many have thru-necks. The woodwork of some fakers is difficult to distinguish from that of genuine Ricks. I have worked a few "Ricks" that I believe are very good fakers.

Elys, it's your call but I tend to leave all fakers alone. There are better deals on real RIC parts and basses. If you got this bass and asset stripped it you would be left with a very sorry looking faker, with really no value whatsoever.

No, I am not going to touch it, never fear. But if I had, I would just have thrown away the body after stripping all the legit Rick parts.

Well, just spotted a local guy with a fake 4001 - complete with legit TRC - for sale. He's asking 2,000 EUR for it. I'm gonna drop him a line right now!

It is working. Seller says "Rickenbacker 4001 for sale. I'm not clear on the year of manufacture, but will let you know as soon as I find out. 2, 000 EUR firm price. Terrific tone. No trades accepted."

Paul W. pointed out that fakers have lower quality chrome plating, & it seems to be very true of all the pics I've seen so far.

Notice the pitting of the metal parts, you wouldn't find that on a Rick.
RIC chrome seems to wear very evenly rather than pit, and at a much slower rate.
I have a wear line on the treble pup surround of my '76 4000 from daily playing for 20 years, but it has NO pitting at all.

It's possibly one of the easiest ways to spot a fake.

That one is better than most but still a faker.

I believe it's a Univox. I'd really hate to see someone shelling out 2,000 EUR for a fake 4001, which is why I dropped the seller a line a few hours back. I haven't heard from him yet.

Just got a reply e-mail from the seller of the faker. He said he was selling the bass for a friend, and asked me "How can you tell it is a fake 4001?"... To be continued hehehe.

Okay, this guy came to his senses and finished the auction for the fake 4001. A clever move.
